Welcome back from what seemed like an eternity of Fall break. I hope everyone is rested up and ready to do some artwork. This week, we will begin down the long road of portraits! I do not expect Da Vinci or John Singer Sargent here, but I do expect effort. We are going to try to approach this from a Mr. Potato Head strategy, which just means that from the jump, we are going to work on parts of the head first, then learn to build that head. Eventually this will lead down the road to figure art where we will use a model or what passes for one on our screen. In other news, I will be placing an order for our art supplies this week through Blick Art supply. I am very, very excited about it! We will be exploring exciting media such as Conte Crayon, charcoal, India Ink and Acrylic painting. So, I hope you are ready to dive into it!
This week, we are going to set up a still life that will stay up for three days and will include color. This will be our final project for the 9 weeks and will be graded. We will be spending at least two days critiquing as well. Also, because it needs to be addressed, the behavior in the room has been abysmal and much of that has to do with the level of expectation that I have set for these projects. I think that many of the students are somewhat intimidated by the drawings. I have maintained throughout the class that I do not grade the students based off of how they compare to other students on the level of talent. I look at their work ethic, their progress and how well they listen to instruction and how they make changes to their work based off of that instruction. We will be trying a different approach in the next 9 weeks and hopefully it will help the people who actually want to be in this class, because taking this class is a privilege, not a right.
This week in Art History, we will be taking a look at some master artists when it comes to color pencil and how to blend the colors of these amazing art tools. We will also begin another drawing that will be another grade for the week. Parents, please encourage your students to draw and complete assignments. Many students are not finishing and it is costing them on their grades.
