Hey all....so I made a mistake last week in my study guide. I did not check how I handled our midterm last year and put out the wrong guide. I will fix that on Monday and we will also hand out exemption forms. Those forms need to be returned by October 1st, so you only have one day to get those back to me. I will mark them as either exempt or not exempt on October 1st. If you have any make up work, please turn it in by the end of the day on September 30th. This week we will finish our notes on Rome, get our grades shored up on Tuesday for the remainder of the 9 weeks and on Wednesday we will have a map to work on of ancient Rome. Thursday will be the exam date and those not taking the exam will be with our admin team in a mini-field day. On Friday, we will start our new notes on the Roman Empire.

Hey all! Welcome to the last homecoming week of your Jr. High experience! We will have a test on Monday, so make sure that you study. Picture day is on Tuesday, so dress your best. In class we will start our discussion about the Roman Republic. This will start our long journey through the Roman period (two sections from Unit two and one from Unit three). Wednesday will have an assignment attached to it on the Roman people. Thursday and Friday will be a very fluid situation. We have our pep rally on Thursday and the SEHS homecoming parade on Friday to consider. We will fit in our work where we can.
Hey all! This week we will start the week by exploring the adventures of Alexander and finishing off our notes on Ancient Greece leading into Ancient Rome! On Wednesday, students will explore Ancient Greece further using primary and secondary sources. On Thursday, we will take one last look at Spartan warriors using a graphic organizer and on Friday, we will have our test on Ancient Greece. The test will be in essay format and uses a new type of essay question called "State the Relationship". Students will be given three ideas, places, people, events, etc.. and this will be the bases for their essay. Essays of this kind are great for measuring how well the students actually understand the material as well as works on their writing skills. For example, if this were a World history class at 9th grade, they might see these three: Hitler's election as Chancellor of Germany, Italian Fascism, and Japanese Militarism. They would take those three and create an essay. If you have any questions about this week's test, please let me know!
Who's ready for a busy week? The good news for this week is that no one has a test on Friday! 5th period does have their test on the Ancient Israelite's on Monday, but that was their choice. All classes will begin notes on Ancient Greece on Monday. Notes from here on out are mostly slower paced because they are longer, so expect a test every other week rather than in the same week. We also have a lot of primary and secondary source documents this week that include assignments. Greek history has a lot of drama and violence involved, so the topic is pretty interesting overall. Also, progress reports go home on Tuesday, so be on the lookout for those. On Wednesday, we will take a break from our regular studies to observe 9/11 and it's history.
Hey all! Ok, so this will be a very busy week that will include a test...yes, two tests in two weeks. The reason for this treachery on my part is that we are working on China for the EP class and the Israelite's in my standard class and the section/chapter is very short overall. EP students will be happy to learn that the test is all multiple choice for China (matching and typical multiple choice questions). So, for Tuesday, we will start notes and should be finished with all notes by Wednesday. Students will know what is on the test by Wednesday as well, so they should be able to study the night before our football game. We will actually start working on Ancient Greece by Friday. All tests from this past Friday will be graded by Wednesday or sooner as well.
On a side notes, I've received multiple emails by rightfully concerned parents about their student's grades and assignments turned in. Let me start with tests. The tests for my EP classes are challenging and they will continue to be that way throughout the semester. Students usually take those first couple of tests to adapt to that, but rest assured that the class average is in that sweet spot of around a 75% average. I think the 8th grade is a great year to come to grips with adversity and the grand majority of them come out of the experience just fine. As far as assignments go, I tell the students what day the assignment is due and I usually grade it that same day or the next. Once I grade an assignment, I do not go back each day to check to see if more students turned the assignment in. I will check it once or twice (depending on the workload that week) and if the work in the box, I grade it then. I try not to take work home with me (except for research papers) too often because I have come to the conclusion that I enjoy marriage and would like to remain so...I'm sure some of you can relate.
