Hey folks! This week in World History we are going to be taking Monday and Tuesday to finish up our notes on the Byzantine Empire and Christianity. We will also complete our vocabulary. We will have assignments for these two days as well. On Wednesday, we will take a break from our World History to take a look at the history of Halloween! It's amazing what you can do with an old pillow case, some scissors and mom's makeup kit. On Thursday, we will have our Unit 3 Section 1 test on the Byzantine Empire and Christianity. I will be out on Friday (and the the subsequent Monday for that matter) and the students will begin learning about Africa in the Middle Ages.

Hey everyone! This week in World History, we are going to begin to round out our discussion of the Roman Empire. Rome lasts over 1,500 years and goes through a lot of change in that time, so we have been going through all of their phases. I actually this era of Rome, the Eastern Roman Empire in Byzantium with Christianity because they intertwine so well with each other. So, we will discuss the early church, the beginnings of the Catholic Church and of course the points of contention within the church early on. For those concerned about teachers discussing religion, rest assured that I do not preach to the kids and we just discuss the facts and how the religion influences the Western world. We will do pretty much the same in a few weeks when we look at Africa, the Middle East and Islam. All of this builds up to the Crusades in the Middle Ages.
This week in World History, we're going to finish up our notes on the scandalous Roman Empire and make our way into Rome: Part II...Byzantium and Christianity. On Monday, we will start the day by having our Draft Day for our research papers. The students already know where they stand in line for picking their topics, so it should be a painless process. I will also hand out instructions for the paper. We will then finish up our notes and review for our test. On Tuesday, we will work on the Roman Republic DBQ. This will not include the Essay and will only be the research work for it. On Wednesday, we will have our test on the Roman Empire. Thursday is honors day and we will be beginning our discussion on not only the continuation of the Roman empire now that it has moved East, but also Christianity and it's massive influence on World History. Alas, I will not be there on Friday...I will be in Tuscaloosa for a Dr. appointment. The students will be working on a map of the Roman Empire, which you will see below. Though the map will be located on my projector screen, I will also allow students to access it on their devices, so be sure to either bring it up here or on remind. I recommend downloading it to your device before even coming to class.
So we have a short week and we will try to get a few things done, barring Hurricane Michael getting in the way of our good times. On Wednesday, we will start our notes on The Roman Empire which pretty much reads like a script from Jersey Shore and House Wives of Atlanta, so it should be a fun time. We will also check out the Rules in the Roman Republic...which are still in effect early on in the Empire. On Thursday, we will take a look at how Christianity begins to take shape and its early effect on the Roman Empire's policies on religious practices. We will also discuss Mount Vesuvius's eruption and why Pompeii was so well preserved. On Friday, we will be watching the documentary on Pompeii. Everyone have a safe week and don't forget your umbrella.
