Hey all! This week we are going to start our Chinese DBQ on the explorer, Zheng He (pronounced more like Jung Ha). This is the Elmore county wide writing prompt and the essay will be on Wednesday. You will have two class periods (Monday and Tuesday) to complete this assignment. The Essay will be on Wednesday. Speaking up Wednesday, I will be in Birmingham on that day and you will write the essay in my absence. On Thursday, you will work in career prep and I will be in class for first period only. I have to take part in training from 12-3 and I will be in the building and I will check in from time to time. On Friday we will learn about the origins of Halloween!

This week in World History, we will start off with notes about China and its many dynasties over the years. On Tuesday we will be painting Chinese Calligraphy, so make sure that you have something in mind and make sure that your chosen characters do not mean something that you didn't intend...I know you want that awesome Chinese ideograph that you think means "Slaps"...but use a translator to make sure it doesn't mean "grapefruit" or something much worse. You will write what your ideograph means at the bottom of your work. This is a B week, so we will work in Career prep on Wednesday and Thursday. We're doing this mostly because I will not be with you on Thursday. The PBS party will be going on during Mustang period on Thursday and no, I do not know what period you will be in during Mustang period this week...I will probably know by Tuesday or Wednesday though. On Friday, we will learn more about these Chinese Dynasties that we're examining through our notes.
Hey all! Let me first go over what is happening on this short week in World History. We are going to begin learning about China this week. We should be on this topic for at least two weeks and our writing assignment for the 9 weeks is also a part of this, so we will be getting to a DBQ fairly quickly in the 9 weeks. We will have notes on the subject on Wednesday and we have an assignment on Thursday that focuses in on the Geography of China and difficulties that situation entails. Career Prep will be our assignment for Friday. Students will be on Quarter 2 unless they are working ahead...something that is always welcomed.
Now lets talk about two major classroom policy changes that I will be making. For me, these are major departures from my classrooms in the past. The unfortunate issue at hand is that cell phone use and turning in assignments late is completely out of hand and I blame myself for the majority of it. Starting on Wednesday, October 13th 2021, cell phone use will be strictly limited in class. In previous years I've allowed students to glance at their phone for certain activities or even listen to their own music while working. For whatever reason, this has become a huge problem this school year. Students are no longer taking a quick glance at their phone or just listening to their music....they're on their phones blatantly without any regard for their school work. As such, school work is not being turned in. This 9 weeks I had students across all classes (honors and standard) turning in work at the very end of the 9 weeks and in the past, because the problem was never this consistent, I accepted the work and gave full credit. In other years I've had maybe 20 assignments turned in late. This year, I had over 200 assignments turned in late...in one 9 weeks. Over half of those were turned in between October 4th-8th. This is egregious! That said, from this will be the policy on cell phones and late assignments. If I see a cell phone out in class, I will take it up. If the student refuses, I will write them up on a referral. All assignments will have a hard due date. For every school day the work is late, 10 points will be deducted down to a 50%. For example, if an assignment is due on October 20th and isn't turned in until October 22nd, the maximum credit given will be 80%. Obviously weekends and holidays will not count toward the points off. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. This week is all about completing makeup work and finishing up career prep for the quarter. On Tuesday, we have our checkpoint 2 test which we will review for on Monday in all classes. Remember that the study guide is up on Google Classroom as well. All classwork must be completed by Wednesday, October 6th. Career prep grades will be put in on Thursday, October 7th and they will be final. Finish strong!
